As if Mijk's Berlin based NuFunk night had not been tasty enough yet, after several nufunky sessions on the floors of Katerholzig,Ritter Butzke and Soju Bar. Now „Funkit“ has finally found a home every 2nd Wednesday of the month at legendaryrevamped relaunched Delicious Doughnuts, Rosenthaler Strasse 9 in Berlin-Mitte.
Kickoff is March 14th with a„mijkfunk all-night-long special“ to set the fundament of this residency at a reduced admission of only EUR 3,- Also introducing nuFF003. the latest release on Mijk's digital imprint nuFunkFiles.

Da Booty Is Ya Duty

The very first release that explored my new vision of Funk was already released on my Teamwork album in 1999: the track "Da Booty Is Ya Duty".

It was my first and so far only collaboration with Paul M., the artist formerly known as DJ Kid Paul aka Energy 52. You all might know his classic track "Café Del Mar" that he conceived back in 1994(?) with our common friend Harald Blüchel aka Cosmic Baby.

1998, Paul had already stopped his DJ career and was most interested in Hip Hop and other slow grooves. I invited Paul to work on a downbeat track of my Teamwork album and when we sat in my studio, we more and more got caught in a Funk vibe. Nobody really understood our tune back then really. Our biggest success was when it was used as the background soundtrack in an episode of the soccer TV show "ran" on Sat1. When I heard the track I excitedly called Paul who was watching the same show.

Looking back this track has already all the elements that I love about NuFunk. So this is something like my first mijkfunk blueprint.

mijkfunk on Resident Advisor

Now there's a mijkfunk page on the crucial web service Resident Advisor.
You are most welcome to follow it for all updates on my NuFunk stuff.
So what is it that mijkfunk is and that Mijk van Dijk is not?
I grew up with that great Funk sound of the early 80s.
That was the golden aera of the Boogie as well as a breakthrough for artists like Prince and that whole Minneapolis sound.
In those days I was playing the bass in a youth Funk band called "Joystick" in my hometown. Although I was the only bass player in my hometown who could slap and pop the bass in a Funk style, I was so convinced of electronic sounds, that I also bought a Moog Prodigy to play those amazing Boogie bass lines in our live shows. Our percussionist Jürgen also got a Boss Handclapper and we felt that we almost sounded like a real American Electro Funk band. ;-)
After moving to Berlin, I bought my first drum machine to program those Electronic Funk grooves, but soon had to find out that a Roland TR-505 is not a Linn Drum.
A year later Acid-House hit Berlin and I was sucked into the House and Techno groove.
The TR-505 being a stripped-down version of the TR-707 and TR-727 was a nice machine for House beats and so it was a great start into my career as Techno and House producer.
But my passion for Funk never faded and so I am happy to finally revisit my first love in music, The Funk with a radioshow on BLN.fm called "Motherfunk" and my own digital imprint nuFunkFiles under my second artist name mijkfunk! How does it sound like? Check on my Mixcloud!
I reckon I have been a bit lazy on this blog. Say no more: I'm gonna change that! So stay tuned for more mijkfunk info and gossip!

The Oakland Occupy Movement

We received word from Oakland/ Californoa. The city's occupy movement celebrates their stand for freedom and justice to the sound of mijkfunk's "Kids Want Revolution".
FunKills1969 left some amazing comments to the mijkfunk video.
We are glad that this song inspires people to fight for their rights.

This video is also delivers great footage of the peaceful spirit of the Oakland protesters and the police fighting the crowd with teargas, rubber bullets, explosives and brute physical force.Big ups to Oakland, keep on doing what you're doing!

mijkfunk's second release on nuFunkFiles (AKA nuFF) ties in where "Are Friends Digital?" ended:
again no House nor Techno but more NuFunk from Berlin.
Written in early 2010 "Kids Want Revolution" seems like the definite description of what we see on the streets of the world these days: a young generation with a new sensation, once again expressed by the flaming voice of Jette von Roth.

motherfunk #6 pays tribute to the great and late Loleatta Holloway

The forthcoming edition of motherfunk on www.BLN.fm will be dedicated to the late Loleatta Holloway, who died on March 21, 2011. Her songs will be with us forever, especially her voice, that has been sampled off acapella tracks more often than probably any other female singer in the world. Bass In Your Face

The Chænge played their first test gig at Hamburg's "Zur Seuten Deern" located in the heart of the notorious Reeperbahn district and it was a nice success. Florian Schirmacher immediately caught the crowd with his fascinating voice, Catharina Behr delivered the driving back beat on the drums and Mijk van Dijk finally dusted off his bass guitar again.

The trio will reappear in Hamburg on March 17th at Uebel & Gefaehrlich.

Bleed wrote a really nice review for De:Bug (German), saying somthing like this:

"Mijk van Dijk? Really. I am surprised. And excited. The tracks really have an own vision, somewhere at the edge of Elektro and pull through their very own version of warbling Funk in such a good and elaborated way that one has to admit them to be one of the most unique pop blueprints out of Germany this year. And the magic downtempo hit "Skintight" which is one of the hymns of the year for me. I still don't get it."

Raveline from Germany already released a brief news about mijkfunk & nuFunkFiles already in October 2010.

When Mijk van Dijk DJed at Tokyo's super club WOMB during his tour through Japan in November 2010, he was filmed by the good people from Red Bull TV for their program Night Flight, that transmits complete sets from the best DJs of the world in the best clubs in the world.

Of course it was a big honour for Mijk to be picked for such a program and it was no doubt that he had to drop one of his mijkfunk tunes during a set full of House and Techno.

And it created such a buzz!

Many thanks once again to Kana Fujimaki and a her staff at WOMB, Tim Sproten and his Red Bull TV crew and of course to everybody dancing at WOMB that night.

This is 1st edition of Mijk van Dijk's show motherfunk on BLN.fm and it all starts in Berlin with the cool guys of G.I. Disco, who bring back the 80s funk to the clubs to revive an almost forgotten aera of club music in Germany of the early 80s, when black G.I.s, blond German girls and some guys like young Mijk went to clubs, where the DJ would spin Funk music from the US and the UK. Daniel W.Best and Kalle Kuts are so successful with their G.I.Disco parties, they even released a compilation with their favourite 80s Funk tunes.

mijkfunk at Dada Shanghai

Mijk van Dijk toured China and Japan in October/ November 2010 and played a 3-hour-NuFunk set at Dada in Shanghai, a nice must-visit club. Mijk played right after an exciting live show by LA-electro pop duo Pop Levi & Bunny Holiday and took over with some crowd pleasers before digging deep into the magic of NuFunk and 80s-Edits. Thanks to promoter Michael Nee Bing and club owner Michael Ohlsson for the warm hospitality in Shanghai. Enjoy the mixtape, comment at will!

TESTIMONY by label founder Mijk van Dijk

I grew up with 80s Funk myself, slapping the bass in a local Funk band called Joystick (we thought that name was way cool back then....;-). Living in Berlin I bought my first drum machine in order to sound like Prince, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis but soon found out that a TR-505 is not a Linn or DMX.
Then House music hit Berlin and I turned to House and Techno, understanding them as logical step childs of electronic funk. In the late 80s and 90s I helped to create the Berlin Techno scene as we know it, contributing as a journalist, producer, live act and DJ.
In the 00s I rediscovered Funk and worked on concepts, how modern funk could sound like.
The year 2010 finally brought a new wave of NuFunk that does not match with categories like NuDisco, NuRave or Indie/ Dance anymore.
In October 2010 I established a digital label called "nuFunkFiles" and launched my new alter ego mijkfunk for the first single Are Friends Digital?, organized a party series called funkit and a radio show called motherfunk at BLN.fm.
